We camped near Anacortes. In the morning, we took a ferry to San Juan Island. It was freezing. We found a great campground in Lakedale Resort near Friday Harbor. We took a kayaking tour around the island. There were no orca whales. Instead there were plenty of seals with their pups. They stay with their mothers for only three weeks. We also saw water jelly fish. The most interesting were the Pacific madrone trees. The trees have orange bark, and are self pruning. Another fascinating edible plant was bull kelp. It looked like shiny green hose floating in the water. Another beneficial plant is sailors knuckles, a seaweed used as a skin moisturizer. We went to see an alpaca farm. The store had lots of soft jackets, sweaters, and hats made from alpaca wool. They were gorgeous but very expensive. We hiked Mt. Young. It was a historic place where the British and the Americans fought over land in 1870. Finally, we took a ferry from Friday Harbor to Anacortes, and Port Angeles.
